Getting Started with Dynamic Member Properties on Sutra

Organize, segment, and personalize your member experience with powerful new filters and fields.

What Are Dynamic Member Properties?

Dynamic Member Properties are customizable fields attached to each member profile inside a Sutra space. They allow managers to segment, tag, and personalize the experience for their members.

These properties can include:

  • Dropdowns (e.g., Organization)
  • Tags (e.g., Interests)
  • Free-text responses (e.g., “Share something you love”)
  • Location (City and Country)
  • And more!

Current popular use cases:

  • Group members by organization, role, cohort
  • Tag members by interests
  • Add fun or reflective questions like “Share something you love”

🤓 Experience this new feature inside the interactive resource below (powered by Genially).

Click the arrows icon in the bottom right corner to expand the resource and explore it in full screen.

Populating properties

1. Populating via Surveys (New!)

You can now link survey questions directly to member properties, allowing you to collect and auto-populate profile information.

👀TIP: If you're setting up a new program space or community, we recommend creating an automation that prompts members to complete the survey immediately upon registration.

To learn how to set this up, visit: Add survey to registration

If you're working with an existing community, you can simply share the survey link with members. Once completed, their responses will automatically populate their profiles in the Members area.

Steps:

  1. Create a survey

  2. Add a question → choose Member Property as the question type

  3. Select the desired property (e.g., “Organization”)

💡 Each property can only be connected once per survey

  4. Distribute the survey:
  • Link it to your registration automation (new community scenario), or

  • Share the standalone link with your community (existing community scenario)

⚠️ Please note: Members must be logged into their Sutra account to view and complete the survey.

Manage>Surveys> Create New Survey:

To learn how to create surveys, please navigate to: Survey/Quiz within a program

2. Manual Updates

Once these properties have been created, managers (and members themselves) can update properties directly by editing a member profile.

Use Cases

IDG Ambassadors Community

The IDG Ambassador Alumni community uses dynamic member properties to support connection and collaboration among participants. As part of their onboarding, members are invited to complete a short survey that helps personalize their presence in the community.

Using dynamic properties, members are asked to share:

  • Where they live

  • Cohort they were part of

  • Social media profile

  • Field of work (e.g., NGO, Nature, Technology)

  • Areas of interest (e.g., Psychology, Startups, Leadership)

This information becomes part of each member’s profile and can be used to:

  • Filter and sort members based on shared interests or geography

  • Discover potential collaborators

  • Curate more relevant group sessions or project teams

👉 This approach highlights how dynamic properties can support community-building and intentional networking in value-driven spaces.

Co-Creators Collective

The Co-Creators Collective is a free community hosted by Sutra, where creators using the platform can connect with each other, explore collaboration opportunities, and stay informed about free events offered by the Sutra founders. It’s a creative commons for facilitators, educators, and other change-makers.

To foster meaningful connections and increase discoverability, members are asked to fill out a short survey. The information collected is used to populate their member profile card in the Members area.

This data is used to:

  • Enrich the member directory

  • Allow for filtering based on shared interests

  • Help members discover potential collaborators

  • Highlight creative projects and contributions from the community

👉 This is a great example of how dynamic member properties can support light-touch onboarding while making a decentralized space feel more connected and alive.

You're warmly invited to join the Co-Creators Collective — Sutra’s free community space for creators, facilitators, and curious minds. It’s where we gather to share ideas, explore collaboration, and access free events hosted by the Sutra founders.
